As a pescatarian, delicious vegetarian food is pretty much what my dreams are made of. I love trying out new recipes and different meals from my fave restaurants, but somehow I haven’t really explored the realm of solely vegetarian/vegan restaurants… until recently. I don’t know why or how it took me so long to jump on this train, but wowza I’m so happy that I did!
A few weeks ago, I visited The Hungry Herbivore in Orphan Street for the first time. I wasn’t really sure what to expect… all I knew was that it was a vegan restaurant with a brilliant name. As soon as I took the first bite of my creamy cashew alfredo pasta (and tasted my friends’ food as well, obvs) I knew I had been introduced to a gem. The raw blueberry cheesecake slice that I took away for dessert solidified my love even more.
The restaurant is completely vegan, meaning none of the food or drinks that they serve contain any animal products: no meat, no dairy and no eggs. If you’re imagining a menu consisting of salad alone, you couldn’t be more wrong. Pizzas, burgers, nachos, curry, and pasta are all on the menu as well as plenty of sweet yummies (yesssss pleeeeease). With an aim to combine health and comfort food, it’s impossible to feel deprived of deliciousness here. And guess what… good quality, clean ingredients mean that you don’t have to feel guilty about eating super yummo food. Wheee!
I know that my eating habits make me biased, but I just love that vegan and vegetarian restaurants like this are becoming more common and seriously popular. Aside from encouraging people to become more conscious about what they eat and broadening people’s opinions and perspectives about food, these restaurants show that you don’t need to compromise on taste when eating vegan or vegetarian meals.
I have been to The Hungry Herbivore three more times this month, which is a statement in itself since it isn’t exactly close to where I live. Even Luke, who doesn’t particularly enjoy vegetables or vegan food, gave it a mega thumbs up. Although I do think it was the chocolate-orange raw cheesecake that sealed the deal. But who wouldn’t be swayed by that?
If you ever find yourself near Loop or Orphan street, do yourself a favour and head over to this spot. You certainly won’t regret it!
